ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar Tuesday said the number of beneficiaries under the BISP will be increased from 4.8 million to 5.3 million – an increase of 29% since 2012-13.
He said the monthly stipend under the program was initially set at Rs 1000, and was enhanced by 20% by PML-N government last year to Rs 1200. This year it was being enhanced by another 25% by raising it to Rs 1500, making the total increase to 50%.
He said reaching out to the poor was a major policy objective of the government and National Income Support Program (NISP); comprising Prime Minister’s Youth Program and Benazir Income Support Program.
He said the BISP remains the biggest effort to help the poor through cash-transfers and said given government’s commitment to the welfare of the poor, the funding was immediately raised to Rs 75 billion, while adding an important component under the PM’s Youth Progam.
“We are further enhancing this allocation to Rs 118 billion, representing approximately 200% increase since 2012-13.”
